A study at Dartmouth College of the English Wikipedia noted that, contrary to usual social expectations, anonymous editors were some of Wikipedia's most productive contributors of valid content. Wikipedia has harnessed the work of millions of people to produce the world's largest knowledge-based site along with software to support it, resulting in more than nineteen million articles written, across more than different language versions, in fewer than twelve years.
The students were given a prompt and twenty-five minutes to respond to it.
Since then, SAT has modified its timed essay to reflect a fifty-minute period and the nature of the prompt has changed over to one where students read a passage and analyze it. Here are some ways you can approach these lessons: Teach them as written, no changes. This is not a bad idea because it gives the students the opportunity to practice the TRIAC body paragraphs under a timed writing event.
Help the kids with the outline on the white board, and then if there's time, have them write the paper in class; otherwise have them do it at home. Expand the time allowed for the essays to thirty or forty minutes, keeping everything else the same.
After all, this still gives the students practice writing timed essays such as they might encounter in future English exams.
I know my kids in college frequently have to write these types of papers during their class period at their colleges. You can have them do it at home or in class if you have the time. Still help with the outline for Lesson 17, but have the kids work more independently for Lesson 18 by using the lesson instructions to the teacher.
By Lesson 18, the kids are working entirely on their own. Take a poll of your class to find out whether your students will be sitting for the essay exams for either the SAT or ACT, and instead give them opportunities to practice that style of essay while still teaching the TRIAC.
Or, invest in the High School Essay Intensive and take your students on a little side journey for a few weeks going over one or more of the timed essay approaches. Here is what I did. I polled the class to see who would be sitting for which exams. All but one of my students were planning on not writing the essay at all.
Instead they are all planning on either not going to college or going to college by getting an Associate's degree first and then transferring. Since that is the makeup of my class, I decided to expand the timed essay to thirty minutes, as I think that's more likely what a student would have for time in a class of course this could vary.
I then worked with the students on the first outline and sent them home to do the timed essay.
I told the students that if they had accommodations, they could use them just as if they were sitting for a formal exam at their college or national exam.
